Pattern Languages, part 15: Intuition
“In a network, our evolutionary trajectories: did we forget to buy milk and honey, honey?”
@johnkellden
Do we have our affairs in order? What currencies, conducive to what flows, enlivening what meandering riverbeds? Are we drowning in information, yet feel starved for story?
“Here, said she,
Is our cards: the drowned Syrian Migrant,
(Those are pearls that were his young eyes. Look!)
Here is Bella Donna, the Lady of the Inshore Account,
The lady of squandered situational awareness.
Here is the Mad Man with three wands, just as advertised,
and here the Wheel of Governance,
And here is the one-eyed Data Merchant, and this card,
Which is blank, is something we all carry on our back,
Which we thought we were forbidden to see. I do not find
The Neo Liberal. Fear death by water.”
@johnkellden, riffing on The Waste Land
Win¹
How do we win?
This question has been gamed to death, now with Twitter having more or less gone to the dogs and weaponized discourse. Fb following suit, patching us up in order for us to endure one gazillion more selfies and catgifs, as part of our sweet shared misery.
“The summer is here at last
The sky is overcast
And no one brings a rose for Emily.”
— The Zombies
Win²
How do we win-win?
Through extending our analog/digital filters, into online, digital, virtuereal, in ways that helps shape different circles and graphs, that shape our talk, know, like, trust, transact — in return and in kind, in a context of…
“They spoke with soft persuading words
About a living creed of gentle love
And turned the arm to sounds unheard
And showed me strangest clouded sights above.”
— The Zombies
Win³
How do we win-win-win?
Through engaging in conversations that mind and matter, weaving social cognition together with participatory inquiry approaches, towards social, connected, digital learning and, over time, scalable learning.
“Do you remember golden days and golden summer sun
The sound of laughter in our ears
In the breeze as we would run?”
— The Zombies
Win⁴
How do we win-win-win-win?
How do we build a new, different, better autopoietic system, with faster, more responsive, more trimtabbing feedback loops?
Daniel Schmachtenberger :
“…how do we stop something with this much momentum? We don’t. We build a new autopoietic system with faster feedback loops that is not self-terminating and it wins.
To ensure that the new system doesn’t eventually self-terminate, it has to have the same type of complexity-increasing antifragility of the natural world. It has to be an extension of the symbiosis and novelty maximizing, complex system dynamics of nature.”
You’ve made a makeshift digital camp together with a few select others in the fledgling networked global village. How are you intuiting? What are you exploring? What generative situational assessment and awareness, engaging in what stories out of which, performing what tasks, returning to what criteria and measures of generative review? What are the necessary and sufficient criteria of places where we grow in ability to coordinate our flourishing? What evolutionary trajectories leads to one million profoundly different Luzern villages, convivially distributed?
“The fecundity and flourishing diversity of the North American continent led the earliest European explorers to speak of this terrain as a primeval and unsettled wilderness — yet this continent had been continuously inhabited by human cultures for at least ten thousand years.”
— David Abram
How are we going to inhabit Gaia for the next ten thousand years? What plateaus, places and evolutionary trajectories are we considering when crafting our scenarios?
“That indigenous peoples can have gathered, hunted, fished, and settled these lands for such a tremendous span of time without severely degrading the continent’s wild integrity readily confounds the notion that humans are innately bound to ravage their earthly surroundings.”
— David Abram
Win⁵
How do we win-win-win-win-win?
Large parts of this can be digitally augmented. The core constraint is not residing solely in digital, but rather our ability to extend our social cognition, into digital.
“Awe carries two sorts of people in two entirely different directions: the open-minded people it carries towards nature and generativity; in the judging people it brings a retreat into old polarized beliefs, coping patterns and comfort zone behavior. Mind you, though this may seem to justify our Age of Awakening, our observation that old belief systems are nothing but an organized, gigantic fraud and a curse to the human race, nothing could be farther from the truth. They possess these two aspects, the polarizing ones appealing to people stuck in tribalism and fear; but what is actually happening is that when spirit touches our soul, mind and desire, our nature stirred to its depths over questions which we feel to be overwhelmingly vital, you get the bad stirred up as well as the good; the mud as well as the water. It doesn’t seem to matter much which belief system, for both types of reactions occur in our own unique individual mix and generative sequence, in each moment and in all people so touched.”
@johnkellden riffing on Alfred North Whitehead
Metalogic trimtabbing, co-evolving with emergent purpose. This pattern of play, pattern of interaction, when practiced and sustained over time, is what shamen of old refer to as “luminous path”.
“Throughout the entire sequence, all in long and medium shots,
nothing can be heard but the uninterrupted sound of the water — no
footsteps, no rustle of clothes, none of the words exchanged by the
people on the bank. That is the way sound is made expressive in this
sequence, that is how he uses it.
Above all, I feel that the sounds of this world are so beautiful in
themselves that if only we could learn to listen to them properly,
cinema would have no need of music at all.”
— Andrei Tarkovsky
The intersect of Questions and Flourishing, is where it is possible to divest from old patterns and discover new, slightly different patterns, decide on new paths, develop platforms turned places for metalogue, through which we help each other deploy what serves, produce what is needed.
Win⁶
How do we win-win-win-win-win-win?
Any sufficiently advanced Win⁶ game, is indistinguishable from a 21C Transition of our own enacting, making, shaping and making it through in one peace.
“Now we’re there and we’ve only just begun
This will be our year
Took a long time to come.”
— The Zombies
One of the advantages with patterning and pattern languages is, you can connect the dots in systematic and symmathesic ways.
Here, transition is no longer an abstract noun, but rather a proactive, presencing, verb.
Our naming our thinks, gatherings and things, wielding wisely as we wend our way.
“What’s Identity?
It is not toil, yet feet happily descended and moving.
Nor technology wielding arm,
nor tracings of a too social sense of self inscribed on face,
nor any other part contested between
uniqueness and belonging.
To name, to another: What dialogue?
In a network, that which we call a chat.
By any other name would be as enactive.
So 8bn secret friends would, were they not story bound,
enacting that innate perfection, already awed.
Without that proprietary entitlement,
dear fellow human, rekindle your naming;
And for our naming, wending I and Thou and Thee,
coming alive, becoming ourcellves.”
@johnkellden riffing on Shakespeare
There’s also language magic at work, with all the win^n words, transforming how we language, how we make meaning, using what definitions of what words, including re-defining existing. An ongoing, evolving, meaning-making-moving-with. Moving from power-over to power-with? Yes, and then some.
Win⁷ … and, by extension, ^n
It is perfectly possible to posit a win⁷ as well, but we don’t need it here, since that is essentially a superset of presence, a proactive surrendering to what is, a transforming of karma into dharma in each and every moment.
Any and all ‘notions^n’ can be both conceptually and practically useful though, both in their own write and as parts of a re-aligning with essential character and evolutionary purpose.
meaning-making-moving-with
The win⁵, win⁶ and win⁷ are the evolutionary whereto and why, to the win², win³ and win⁴ what and how.
Win, in a context of win^n, is co-extensive with experience. As if each and every experience, is (obliquely, secretly) a learning experience.Experiences here seen over a long period of time, including beyond individual lives: evolutionary journeys of the soul.
Living system principles, is usually applied to the level of win¹. A subset of win in common language, is often referred to as “lose” and/or “fail”. What does your intuition, your heart of hearts, tell you?
“Its gonna be nice to have you back again with me
Watching the laughter play around your eyes.”
— The Zombies
Focussing our mind on lose and fail, is synonymous with asking the universe to bring more of the same or similar, until the full learning experience is embraced. Here, anger and it’s weaker cousin, frustration, are excellent signs of a possible levelling up in what game we are currently playing.
Win
Trusting our intuition, learning to see with our hearts, we can ask different questions together with the universe and listen forth different sounds.
Sounds of healing, life and glow unfolding
Through our open hands inciting and inviting us
Limitless undying love which shines around us like eight billion selves
And calls us on and on across the universe”
@johnkellden riffing on Across the Universe
