Participatory Inquiry, episode 47: Trust

“In a network, understanding is the stopping rule.”
@johnkellden

All stuff has usefulness problems. This includes words. Accept. Move on. Experience. Share. Understanding and embracing that those four words preceding this sentence, is always and already verbs, how you trust yourself and the rest of the world enough, to move. Move. Trust, movement; movement, trust.

Card: Trust
As part, parcel, parsing and participatory inquiry: trust. But how do we play the card trust? How do we trust? How are we to trust? How YOU doing?

Trust

Trust is an enkinaesthetic verb.

Trust is a proactive, presencing, preemptive, purposing, pronoid, practical and phronetic approach to life and signs.

Trust is getting a fire going, to keep us through the night.

Gathering around the fire, and in our telling and listening forth enkinaesthesia, becoming aware of spiritual forces enveloping and assisting our every camp and path.

At the corner of path and embers, we gather and play. Our own unique twists on what cards we’ve been dealt in life, and what insights, will help others get through theirs.

Card: Individuation

Individuation: Practice
Practice is to 103% about a more human, social and nature becoming. Our boundary management, in service to preferable outcome management, living fully, stewarding by example, being of service at our own unique dent in the universe in the making.

Individuation: Play
We are always and already immersed in action. In a network, we play^n in order to enjoy game^n experiences, to win^n.

Individuation: Pronoia
A sense of awe, embracing our temporary, brief spell of synthesis in a universe where we are infinitesimally small, yet seamlessly part of the whole, each and every moment we perform continuity, novelty and change.

Individuation: Process
Edges are sensemaking affordances. The only way to manage edges, is through engaging in complex responsive processes, at times taking thought, at other times networking, and, always and already, dialogue.

Individuation: Principle
The principle of individuation, describes the manner in which a thing is identified as distinguished from other things.

The concept appears in numerous fields and is encountered in works of Carl Gustav Jung, Gunther Anders, Gilbert Simondon, Bernard Stiegler, Friedrich Nietzsche, Arthur Schopenhauer, David Bohm, Henri Bergson, Gilles Deleuze and Manuel De Landa.

Individuation: Experience
Experience is multi-parallell information processing, multi-order cybernetics and that recursive weaving between principles and practice. Individuation is principled practice.

Enkinaesthesia: the fundamental challenge for machine consciousness
Susan Stuart

ABSTRACT
In this short paper I will introduce an idea which, I will argue, presents a fundamental additional challenge to the machine consciousness community. The idea takes the questions surrounding phenomenology, qualia and phenomenality one step further into the realm of intersubjectivity but with a twist, and the twist is this: that an agent’s intersubjective experience is deeply felt and necessarily co-affective; it is enkinaesthetic, and only through enkinaesthetic awareness can we establish the affective enfolding which enables first the perturbation, and then the balance and counter-balance, the attunement and co-ordination of whole-body interaction through reciprocal adaptation.

Keywords: Enkinaesthesia, phenomenology, qualia, phenomenality

In the corner of enkinaesthesia and wicked problems, what stories?

Who are we, when we share stories?
When have we shared enough?
When is it time to break camp and set out on the rest of our journeys?

Stopping Rule?

Wicked problems have no stopping rule. Since there is no definitive “The Problem”, there is also no definitive “The Solution”.
— Jeff Conklin

- Ok, what about becoming clear of who we are and what we’ve gathered to achieve?
- You mean organizing?

Perfect?
Organizing can be done in many different ways. One way to organize words is to create a glossary. Maybe we need more than one glossary? Or do we go with the OED, the Oxford English Dictionary, and expect everyone we’re gathering with to understand and use all 170k words, trusting everyone we’re working with there’s perfect, shared, shareable understanding?

Wicked problems always occur in a social context — the wickedness of the problem reflects the diversity among the stakeholders in the problem.
Jeff Conklin

Context?
Yes, a context of nature, dialogue, generativity, creativity, connectivity, learning and mutuality.

Questioning is da shiznit
What is the nature of trust? How do we engage in dialogue, with ourselves, with others and with the world? Is there generativity to be teased out of our understanding, out of our understanding of trust? If there’s not trust, aka a wicked problem, can we hold space for imagination and find ourselves creative inside? Once there’s creative flow in our small team, does it scale? Is there necessary and sufficient connectivity in place? Ok, so with all of that more or less worked out, are we open to learn? Last but not least, in this generative trust-flow sequence, is there mutuality?

- Ermahgerd!
- Yes, precisely!

Understanding?
Understanding is a superset, from which small select parts can at times be used to address mind and nature: resourcefulness, resources and knowledge logistics. Dissonance turned reflexivity, reflexivity turned resilience and response-ability, which begets reach. Reach, which eventually returns to resonance and dissonance, dissonance and resonance: art.

21C?
In the 20C, all knowledge logistics required that we schlepped our physical beings around, inside prefab narratives. In the 21C, this is changing.

Card Sessions?

Cards considered in light of questions,
a gamified way to help you reframe things.

How we experience this, how we understand, how we share — co-evolving with ITIMNEA, Instinctual social animals, Tribes, Institutions, Markets, Networks, Ecosystems, Aware Agents— as a function of our individual, conversational, connected, collective and concrescent intelligence.

“In a network, understanding is the stopping rule.”
@johnkellden

Wicked! Varieties of perception, understanding and presence
Ok, some redux. For good enough context, consider a matrix. In one dimension, the characteristics of your wicked problem as you see it. In the other dimension, a context of connectivity, mutuality and learning. Now you have a map. Now you have to aviate, navigate and communicate, with a good enough rinse, rhyme and reason relative to the territory and paths chosen.

Map, territory, dialogue;
patterning that re-aligns

Rinse and rhyme
The idea here is to trace generative sequences through the matrix. Underlying the matrix, there’s a pattern language. What you derive from the patterns, are always (more or less) generative sequences. Distill into chunks, into cards, into code, into artifacts. Apply your own understanding. Trust. Move.

Cards catalyzing conversations that mind and matter?
Method cards are simplified story cards with an emphasis on why and how.

Why?
Because a patterning that realigns.

How?
Method cards. Commented, annotated, applied.

And Venn? Yes, here and now
Once you’ve developed a deck of method cards that helps bring shared, shareable understanding, given the context, you can design problem spaces and solution spaces. Draw two (story, method,…) cards, notice what might be between them. In the intersect you find yourself in, notice an emerging, unfolding story. Trust the unfolding storylines.

Trust?
Yes. When your every move is thwarted and you yield, rather than believing you need to accept defeat, instead you find a gift bestowed. When you believed you trusted someone and then was betrayed, only to to find a deeper level of awareness as part, parcel and parsing of the experience and understanding.

“In transition, you make a unique dent in the known universe
by accepting the universe denting you in return and in kind.”

@johnkellden

Unique Dent?
When you go head to head against the rest of the universe, only to find your will turned skillful will and then mindful will and then flow. Trustflow. Trust. Movement. Trust movement. A surrendering to what is, that brings you and the rest of the universe seamlessly back together, as if for the first time. All together now.
