Participatory Inquiry, episode 106: Liminal

“In a network, in transition, we return to the beach and engage in revitalizing play, only after having removed suit and tie.”

The problem is, you believe you can have it both ways. You can’t. You can’t revitalize the world, until you have at least begun to revitalize yourself. You can’t enter the liminal fray at the beach and experience the joy of letting the waves embrace you, and still remain at a safe distance.

In reality, which is what you need to move closer to, the ambiguity of the situation and the disorientation in your mind, are two welcome signs.

Relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.
Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.

They occur inbetween, when participants no longer hold rigidly to their old rituals and status but have not yet begun the transition to the place where they will come alive, when the transition is complete.

Moment of Birth
There’s many moments of birth, moments of rebirth, moments when you fully embrace the wave flowing through you, leaving you in a better position to become more fully yourself.

“We cannot think first and act afterwards. From the moment of birth we are immersed in action and can only guide it by taking thought.”
Alfred North Whitehead

Practical Sovereignty
The sharp pebble on which you stub your toe, is there to help you to not stub your toe, to let go of some of your precaution. How you move when at the waters edge, will shift and change for the better and your feet will awaken to the feel of the rounded pebbles as you meet the waves.

“It is a profoundly erroneous truism that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing. The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them.”
― Alfred North Whitehead

Your curmudgeonly held opinion is useless
At the edge, your own separate, curmudgeonly held opinion, is useless. After deciding to stick around in the midst of the action, you will also realize it is meaningless. Your keeping to yourself, precisely what was keeping you from enjoying the waves, the flow of life.

The immense gift from nature, should you return to her, is the experience of your opinion turning insight, a unique insight that *is* part, parcel and parsing of your rediscovering a playfulness disposition, immersing yourself together with others, enabling your work in expressing your self, into play, into participatory inquiry.

“Nature is probably quite indifferent to the aesthetic preferences of mathematicians.”
― Alfred North Whitehead

Refining your essential you
Wave after wave, the sharp edges of your old increasingly obsolete self is turned smooth. Not smooth as in false. Smooth as in embracing what is essential, what is your own unique place in an axiomatics of things, where things are both objects, their newfound meaning without limit, and things as in gatherings of people immersed in the here and now.

Eventually, you’ll find yourself letting go even of your muddling through. The axioms were always and already universal and your essential character, always and already seamlessly part of it all.

“Rightness of limitation is essential for growth of reality. Unlimited possibility and abstract creativity can procure nothing. The limitation, and the basis arising from what is already actual, are both of them necessary and interconnected.”
― Alfred North Whitehead

Open Inquiry
Your old handshake protocol is already in a process of upgrading. The liminal space between your conscious and unconscious, is changing, transforming, embracing the transition from shards of solipsism to more fluid patterns of open inquiry, a levelling up of your ability to play, to negotiate, to participate.
The strategic outcome of you more and more embracing this new protocol? Practical wisdom, however your unique individual essential character, come to meet and appreciate your collective evolutionary purpose.

“Intelligence is quickness to apprehend as distinct from ability, which is capacity to act wisely on the thing apprehended.”
― Alfred North Whitehead

Contextual Intelligence Co-evolving with Unfolding Wholeness
You still believe you can remain safe inside denial. You can’t. What happens is, your confusion grows, your shards and glitches barely kept at bay with all your things and thinks, all your pre-occupations keeping you conspicuously busy, keeping you separate from everything you secretly long for.

your unfolding wholeness

Eventually, things, thinks and gatherings are brought together, forming a newfound more integral refrain and seed, out of which a renewed sense of wholeness, a return flight home. Your new point of departure, right there at the edge.
